About the Artist

Judy Wilder Dalton
My interest in art goes back to high school days, where I first developed a love of drawling. After I married and moved to Longview, Texas, I began to take painting classes and my hunger for learning continued to grow. My art training developed through many classes, workshops and teachers. Beginning in 1975, I began entering competitions and winning awards and recognition on a national and international level. In the late 80’s I was invited to participate in an art apprenticeship with William a Herring from El Paso, Texas. Under his tutelage I learned to take ownership of my talent and to become comfortable with expressing my own vision of art. Then again in the early 90’s I was privileged to study under Dallas portrait artist, Kay Polk in her atelier program. Kay encouraged me to place an ad in Southern Accents magazine for my pet portraits and I soon I was receiving many requests for commission pet portraits. I always continue to study, train, and explore mediums. Through the years in art, I have developed so many wonderful relationships with artists and collectors. I hope my art reflects how I see life, with great appreciation.
Landscapes have always been a strong interest to me and my present work reveals that love. I would define my style as somewhere between expressionism, characterized by open emotional use of color, line and texture to impressionism, striving to convey the essence of a subject without being literal in interpretation.
I believe there is a strong human response to color and that it reflects and affects our moods. My painting begins with a broad wash of color and rhythms. I establish a strong design structure and color harmony. Each layer reveals more forms and shapes. The use of lines and textures add intrigue and interest to the surface. My intention is to keep the elements universal and invite the viewer to experience it on an emotional level as well as visually. The elements of form, line, color and texture are my focus. I love the delicacy, vigor and beauty in them apart from the subject.
